Woods looks like he’ll be spending next week somewhere other than Westchester
Tiger Woods’ initial embrace of the PGA Tour’s new playoff system may end up being more of a slap in the face.
Based on a series of conversations today, the Barclays executive director Peter Mele said that he was “not optimistic” that Woods would be playing next week at Westchester Country Club, in the first of four FedEx Cup playoff events. Woods has won back-to-back tournaments, including the PGA, and recently backed off his stated intention to play all four playoff events.
“I’m not optimistic that he’s going to play next week,” Mele said. “Just through different contacts and things I’ve heard, I’m not optimistic he’s going to make it.”
While Mele would not reveal who he’s talked to, he said it wasn’t anyone who’s been in direct contact with Woods. Representatives at PGA Tour headquarters in Florida say they were waiting for tomorrow’s 5 p.m. deadline to comment.
“We haven’t heard anything official, but we know an announcement one way or the other is imminent, as the deadline is tomorrow at 5 p.m,” PGA Tour spokeswoman Laura Neal said. “But until Tiger says that he is playing or that he’s not playing, any comment from the PGA TOUR would just be speculation.”
After stating several times during the season that it was his intention to play all four playoff events  including in the aftermath of his PGA win on Sunday  Woods was less definitive when asked about the Barclays two days later.
“I may play, and I may not, Woods told reporters.
