Golf in the Lower Hudson Valley, from high schools to the pros

Scarsdale wins

I saw my first match of the season today and Scarsdale certainly didn’t disappoint. The Raiders depth was on full display in beating Mahopac 206-215 at Fenway Golf Club.

David Spiro led the way for Scarsdale, which is already 4-0. The sophomore birdied two of the first three holes and ended up the medalist with a 2-over 37.

Spiro is one of the many talented underclassmen on this loaded Scarsdale team, many of which are sophomores. Coach Andy Verboys said he is ecstatic with the low scores this early in the season and a versatility in the lineup that he hasn’t had in over five years.

On this Scarsdale team, it seems almost everyone has the ability to contribute and the lineup continues to change based on who is playing well. Verboys said he had 27 kids tryout for the team and whittling it down to 13 was a challenge.

The Raiders are certainly proving themselves as one of the top contenders in the area and senior Lee Gilbert said the goal is to be one of the three teams that qualify for the Section 1 Championship at the end of the season. If they keep getting solid play like this all the way down the lineup, they might just be there.

As for Mahopac, the top two, Luke Feehan (38) and Marisa Kamelgarn (40) played solidly as expected. Both are juniors and both should compete for a spot on the state team.

Feehan missed out on a playoff to go to states by one shot at Sectionals last year. Coincidentally, that was the last time he played Fenway. Today went much better.

Mahopac also got a huge boost from newcomer Joe Raitano. The sophomore played baseball last year, but looked at ease in his first varsity match. He drove the first hole and then drained a 25-footer for eagle. Not a bad start. He finished with a 38 and should make plenty of noise this year as well.

All in all, not a bad start for Mahopac in their first match of the season. Expect big things from both these things throughout the rest of the season.
