Teeing Off

Golf in the Lower Hudson Valley, from high schools to the pros

One of the guys

Today I went to Siwanoy Country Club to be a part of a photo shoot with Ellen Oswald, who is a senior on the Clarkstown South team. The shoot was for a feature I’m writing on Oswald, who recently signed with St. John’s to play for their women’s team.

On the high school level though, Oswald has been a part of a very successful boy’s team for four years, including helping the Vikings win the county championship last year. She’s been the only girl on the team the whole time and has been a starter the past three years.

I hope our presence wasn’t too much of a distraction before she teed off. She shot a 45, but her team fell to Bronxville 217-219 in what was somewhat of a mini-upset.

In other events, it’s been tough to get a read on certain teams all year. Take Iona Prep. The Gaels knocked off undefeated Fordham Prep, which is No. 1 in the power rankings, yesterday. Then today, they came back and lost 211-213 to an underrated John Jay team.

It’s kind of like my own golf game. Sometimes I look like a bad hacker and sometimes I look like a terrible hacker.

I will be at the Scarsdale vs. Clarkstown North meet on Thursday. Back with some thoughts on that.

Also, make sure you check out Mike Dougherty’s feature on Mike Marvin in tomorrow’s (5/7) paper. Marvin is only 24 years old, but has already been the head pro at Hudson Hills for three years. Not a bad gig…

A sports reporter at The Journal News for nearly three years, Alex Myers has covered a bit of everything, but a lot of golf, ranging from the high school level to last year's U.S. Open at Winged Foot. His golf writing goes back to his college days when he attended Wake Forest University. Myers is also an avid player who is constantly trying to improve on his current handicap of 8. Perhaps his biggest thrill came earlier this summer when he conquered the famed 17th hole at the TPC at Sawgrass by hitting a 9-iron onto the island green and walking away with a 2-putt par.
