Teeing Off

Golf in the Lower Hudson Valley, from high schools to the pros

‘Twas the night of sectional seedings

May
15

First off, thanks to Ali G for joining the party. It’s good to see some life out there. As for your question, yes sectionals do start next week.

Round 1 will be Monday at Spook Rock Golf Course in Ramapo and Round 2 will be at Hollow Brook Golf Club in Cortlandt Manor. As always, I’m really looking forward to this event, but probably even more so this year, since I feel like I’ve barely covered any matches (thanks rainy weather, short season, added lacrosse coverage, etc.).

As for predictions, I am going to hold off until I see the final field of 60, which will be determined tonight when the coaches get together to go over the final scoring differentials. There will be plenty of adding, subtracting and dividing. I can smell the wood burning already.

A player needs a 6.0 differential or lower to qualify. In the past few years, that’s worked out to about 60 golfers, so the powers that be decided to cut off the number at 60 if there are that many meeting the requirements.

I will say this about Brewster sophomore Mike Miller, a returning all-state player: I would be stunned to see him not at least near the top of the leader-board come Thursday evening. Back with more later, including hopefully, an update on the big Rye vs. Harrison match at Westchester Country Club, which I was originally scheduled to cover. I’m not as happy to be sitting in the office on this beautiful day instead…

A sports reporter at The Journal News for nearly three years, Alex Myers has covered a bit of everything, but a lot of golf, ranging from the high school level to last year's U.S. Open at Winged Foot. His golf writing goes back to his college days when he attended Wake Forest University. Myers is also an avid player who is constantly trying to improve on his current handicap of 8. Perhaps his biggest thrill came earlier this summer when he conquered the famed 17th hole at the TPC at Sawgrass by hitting a 9-iron onto the island green and walking away with a 2-putt par.
