Golf in the Lower Hudson Valley, from high schools to the pros

A couple Vikings’ milestones

May
16

This past Tuesday was the last high school golf notebook. However, that doesn’t mean the info will stop coming.

Here are a couple tidbits concerning the Clarkstown South High School golf team:

Mike Farsetta made a hole-in-one on the par-3 third hole on the Winged Foot East course in a victory over Mamaroneck. Farsetta used a 9-iron to ace the 141-yard hole. Its the second hole-in-one in school history.

Also, Carlos Fonacier’s recent 2-under 34 at Rotella Golf Course in a win over North Rockland set a school course record low. That bodes well for both Fonacier as well as the Vikings, as the Rockland County Championships will once again be held at Rotella on May 27.

Last year, Clarkstown South captured its first county title since 1994 and John Lenhart won the individual title by firing a 1-under-par 71.

Speaking of hole-in-ones, that’s two now on the year that I’ve heard of (David Spiro on Scarsdale having the other one). Any others out there? How about any players with aces that haven’t occurred in a match? I’m still stuck on zero, but I would still love to hear about other success stories even though they will make me very jealous…

A sports reporter at The Journal News for nearly three years, Alex Myers has covered a bit of everything, but a lot of golf, ranging from the high school level to last year's U.S. Open at Winged Foot. His golf writing goes back to his college days when he attended Wake Forest University. Myers is also an avid player who is constantly trying to improve on his current handicap of 8. Perhaps his biggest thrill came earlier this summer when he conquered the famed 17th hole at the TPC at Sawgrass by hitting a 9-iron onto the island green and walking away with a 2-putt par.
