Final regular season scoring differential rankings

And they’re in. I’ve received the final list of scoring differentials for Section Golf and they are very impressive.

For one, 73 players had averages that rounded to the required 6.0 average (the best 75% of scores are used). Unfortunately, 10 of those players won’t be teeing it off next week in the Section 1 Championship due to the large amount. The top 63 did make it, so it will be a very strong field.

Once again, the first round will start at 10 a.m. at Spook Rock Golf Course in Suffern/Town of Ramapo (I will never figure out the way Rockland is configured) and round two (the top half and ties) will advance to round two at Hollow Brook Golf Club in Cortlandt Manor.

Here are some other highlights from the final averages:

Brewster sophomore Mike Miller edged out Clarkstown North’s Stephen Scialo for the top average in the section. Miller’s average of -.3 (yes, that’s a negative sign) is actually slightly worse than his incredible -.62 from last year, which is an unofficial Section 1 record.

The name Byron Vereschagin jumped out at me as well. The Fox Lane junior wound up with a 2.87 differential to finish 13th overall. I’m pretty sure I have failed to mention this name once in all the notebooks, articles and blog posts, so to Byron, I apologize. Congrats on having the most unheralded stellar regular season.

Four other things really caught my eye. For one, Harrison 8th-grader Michael DiTursi, who shot an even-par 36 at Westchester Country Club last week, finished with the 23rd best average at 3.63.

Right behind him is Mahopac’s Marisa Kamelgarn, who will be the only girl in the field for a third straight year.

But DiTursi is a veteran compared to White Plains 7th-grader (you read that right) John Morrissey. Wow.

And finally, Scarsdale put a staggering seven players into the field, the most by far. If I remember correctly, Rye did the same last year and had them all make the cut at sectionals. We’ll see how this group of Raiders fares come Monday.

I’ll be back with the tee times in a bit.
