Federation Championship

While the high school girls will be wrapping up their season in Baldwinsville, a select group of boys will be teeing it up one last time in the federation championship. For the past two years, I’ve covered this event at Carvel Country Club in Pine Plains, but I am not going to Elmira where it has been moved this year.
Never fear though, I will be chained to my desk in the office both Saturday and Sunday getting updates on the girls state championship as well as this event. The Federation Championship will once again be a one-day, 18-hole tournament and will be held this time at Mark Twain Country Club. The 24-golfer field is made up of (in theory) the top six golfers from the public, private, Catholic and city schools. Play begins at 11 a.m. Sunday.
Once again, the Lower Hudson Valley will be well represented with players qualifying for this event. Here’s the list of local players:
Mike Miller (Brewster): The sophomore is the defending champion and is coming off a third place finish at the state championship at Cornell.
Luke Feehan (Mahopac): The junior just finished tied for 9th at states, easily earning all-state honors.
Then there is seemingly most of the Fordham Prep team…
Jon Renza: The sophomore defended his CHSAA state title. He finished runner-up to Miller in this event last year. He also knows this course well having played very well (4th place I believe) in the New York State Junior Championship last summer.
John Hough: The junior finished tied for fourth at the CHSAA Championships. He also recently qualified for the MGA’s Ike Championship.
Teddy Morrissey: The junior, who has had a breakout season that included helping the Rams to the CHSAA team title, also finished tied for fourth at the CHSAA Championships.
Okay, time to relax after playing 30 holes myself for the second time this week. Not a bad gig, eh?
