A family affair

Bob Miller Jr. is going to remember the details of this day for quite a while.
The head pro at Knollwood shot a 74 in the opening round of the Journal News WGA Open Championship, but he wasn’t concerned about his scorecard.
For the first time, Miller got to play in a competitive tournament with his son, Mike.
“When I called up for our tee times, they had us playing back-to-back,” he said. “I was like, ‘You can’t do that to me.’ I would be too worried about what he was doing so they moved me back a couple of groups. Even so, every three or four holes, I was trying to see how he was doing.”
It was a long day on the greens for Mike, who shot a 75 and missed the cut by a stroke.
To prepare for the round, the Millers squeezed in 18 holes on Sunday at Knollwood in between lessons and and other club duties. They headed in and out, playing a couple holes at a time.
“I came back in with a couple of holes still to play up four, but he wound up beating me by one,” Bob said. “We started at 1:30 and finished at 7:15. Today was fun. I was hoping he’d play better.”
There might have been a minor disagreement on the way home, though.
Mike wants to come back tomorrow and caddy for his father. Bob wants his son to pay a visit to Engineers Country Club to prepare for the MGA Junior Championship, which starts Wednesday.
