Wilson makes Met Am history

He really didn’t have an opportunity to give the gleaming silver trophy a good look, but Cameron Wilson did recognize the names of recent winners.
The 16-year-old is now in their exclusive company.
Wilson beat Sleepy Hollow’s John Ervasti 4 and 3 today at Hackensack Golf Club to become the youngest winner in the history of the Met Amateur Championship, which has been around since 1899. Remember the name. Wilson might rank among the best to play in these parts in the not-too-distant future.
“He’s got tools most people don’t have,” MGA president Allan Small said before handing over the hardware.
The shot most will remember came on the 13th hole of the afternoon round. In order to encourage a little risk and reward, the tee was moved up, leaving 315 yards to the pin. Wilson dropped a ridiculous drive within a foot of the hole, and the ball came to rest some 24 feet away.
He was 4-up two putts later.
Ervasti played remarkably well for a 54-year-old who logged more than a few holes this week. He played 36 holes in the Mittelmark on Monday and 36 more on Tuesday in a U.S. Amateur qualifier. Ervasti played catch-up in the office on Wednesday, then came here on Thursday for 36 holes of stroke play. He followed that up with two matches on Friday and one more on Saturday before today’s final.
In case you’re keeping score, that’s 193 holes.
We don’t know yet whether a side bet was placed, but Ervasti works closely with Sleepy Hollow teaching professional Kevin Sprecher, and Wilson is coached by GlenArbor’s director of instruction Debbie Doniger.
They just happen to be married.
I’m guessing that Sprecher is going to be washing some dishes this week.
