Whippoorwill’s Laura Algerio survived three holes of a sudden-death playoff against Ellen Oswald and won the 11th WMGA/MGA Women’s Met Amateur Championship at Stanwich on Tuesday. Both golfers came in with 4-over 78s in trying conditions. It was the second women’s Met Am win for Algerio, who parred the final hole while the recent St. John’s University graduate failed to get up and down from the back of the green.
“It feels awesome,” Algerio said. “I’ve played with Ellen before and I know how she hits the ball, but I’m always the shorter hitter and I just play my game. I don’t let it bother me that I get out-hit. It doesn’t matter, because my short game is pretty good and I capitalized today when I needed to.”
