Cameron Young, who just wrapped his freshman year at Fordham Prep, shot a 1-over 72 to win the New York State Federation Championship at Bethpage Black on Sunday. The event brings together a field of top performers from the state’s public, Catholic and independent school championships.
The Briarcliff Manor resident, who shot a 33 on the front nine, finished first among 24 of the strongest high school golfers in the state, edging second-place Art Griffin of Northwood School, who shot a 73.
“He was 3-under on the front nine and was playing really well,” said Fordham Prep coach Kevin Gilligan, who helped guide the Rams to their fourth city championship in five years. “The back (nine) of Bethpage is very difficult, so he ran into a little trouble on 13, 14, and 15. He finished off with pars on 16, 17 and 18, though, and was able to pull it out.”
