Cameron Young, who last week captured the Met Junior title, is in third place after the first round of stroke play at the U.S. Junior at Martis Camp Club in Truckee, Calif. The 16-year-old from Scarborough carded a 4-under 68 and is one shot off the lead.
He made four birdies, one eagle and two bogeys.
Will Bernstein, who plays out of Century, opened with 78 and has plenty of work to do if he’s going to move up and qualify for stroke play.
Nicole Morales is part of a fourth-place log jam after the first day of stroke play at the U.S. Girls’ Junior Amateur at Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne, Ind. The 17-year-old from South Salem is among seven players to shoot a 3-under 69. Morales, who is two shots off the lead, has made it to match play each of the previous two years.
