A couple of late birdies allowed Cameron Young to close out his opening-round match at the U.S. Junior Amateur on Wednesday at Martis Camp Club in Truckee, Calif. The 16-year-old from Ossining posted a 3-and-1 victory over Matt Echelmeier of Columbia, Mo.
It was tough sledding most of the day, but he managed to win three holes with pars or worse, and was 1-up after the 15th.
Young increased his lead with birdies on the next two holes, a short par 4 and a long par 3. The Fordham Prep junior is in the Round of 32, and will play a second match on Thursday if he wins.
Theo Humphrey, a Greenwich, Conn., resident who plays out of Sleepy Hollow, lost his opening match 4 and 2 to Ryan Ruffels of Australia. Will Bernstein, a New York City resident who plays out of Century, lost in 19 holes to Corey Eddings of Roseville, Calif.
A trio of timely birdies helped Nicole Morales advance to the Round of 32 at the U.S. Girls’ Junior. The 17-year-old from South Salem beat Isabelle Kane of Winnetka, Ill., 5 and 4 at Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne, Ind. Morales, who plays out of GlenArbor, closed the front nine with three birdies and two pars to go 4-up at the turn.
