Cameron Young got off to a good start in the U.S. Junior Am on Thursday and closed with a flurry, beating Tyson Reeder 3 and 2 to advance to the Round of 16 at Martis Camp Club in Truckee, Calif.
The 16-year-old from Scarborough was 1-up after five holes and never relinquished the lead.
Young was back on the course after lunch, playing George Cunningham of Tucson, Ariz. They were all square through 10 holes when play was suspended for a second time due to severe weather. When the match resumed, it went on and on before Young won in 24 holes.
Nicole Morales saw her run at the U.S. Girls Junior come to a bitter end when a putt for par on the 18th hole at Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne, Ind., hit the hole and stayed out, allowing Bethany Wu from Diamond Bar, Calif., to move on to the Round of 16 with a 1-up victory.
The 17-year-old from South Salem and her opponent were a combined 8-under in the nail-biter.
Morales will have a few extra days of rest in the comfort of home before she heads to the U.S. Women’s Amateur at the Country Club of Charleston.
