Mike Miller advanced to the first stage of Web.Com Tour Q School with room to spare Friday, closing a prequalifier at Arbor Links Golf Club in Nebraska City, Neb. with a course-record 65. The 21-year-old from Brewster finished atop the leaderboard with an 11-under total of 205.
“It’s not a win, but it feels like a win,” Miller said.
There is no prize money until later in the qualifying process.
“All week, I just felt really comfortable,” said Miller, who plays out of Knollwood C.C. “After playing well in the final round of the Met Open, I just decided to let the putter go. I’m playing like there’s nothing to lose and really enjoying this new experience.”
Miller was relaxed from the start, knowing he could make 18 pars and still move on. He made eight birdies and one bogey in the final round.
“When I stepped on the tee I kind of knew what the number was going to be,” he said. “And I knew the conditions weren’t conducive to a lot of guys making a run. I played the par 5s this week in 9-under and pretty much made pars everywhere else.”
Except for practice and some recreational golf with the Knollwood members, Miller is off until the first stage gets under way in October. A second stage narrows the field in November, and the finalists gather Dec. 12-17 at PGA West to play for Web.com Tour cards.
