Brian Gaffney, who took over as head professional at Quaker Ridge Golf Club before the season, went back to New Jersey and shot a 3-under 69 at Bedens Brook Club in a U.S. Open local qualifier. The 43-year-old who spent nine seasons at Rumson Country Club started on the back nine and recorded a rare double eagle at No. 12, a 508-yard par 5. Gaffney had two bogeys and two birdies on the front, and came in a shot ahead of the nearest competitor. He got through sectional qualifying in 2012 and was in the field at Olympic Club.
The other five qualifiers were Alex Edfort of Somerset, N.J. (70), Bill Britton of Rumson, N.J. (72), Kwanwoo Kim, an amateur from Tenafly, N.J. (72), Stephen Shellock of Winter Park, Fla. and Lloyd Jefferson an amateur from South Orange, N.J. (72).
