The last couple of years have hinted that Section 1’s pool of young talent in boys golf should lead to a bright future at the state level. After claiming a team state championship on Monday, the expectations were met.
Boasting a team that consisted of four sophomores, four juniors and only one senior, Section 1 put together a combined score of 74-over par for two rounds at Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell University, beating Section 5 by 10 strokes. Section 1’s round on Monday was 27-over, 14 strokes better than Section 5.
Scarsdale junior Josh Goldenberg paced the team with a 4-over total of 146, good enough for third overall in the 99-player field. Goldenberg shot a 1-under 70 in the final round Monday. Bronxville sophomore Matt Bettino also carded a 1-under on Monday, giving him a 7-over total of 149, which placed him seventh.
Sophomore Brent Ito, the Section 1 champion out of Ardsley, placed 11th with a 9-over 151, and sophomore Christian Cavaliere of Somers placed 12th with a 10-over 152. Other locals placing in the top 25 were Connor Daly, Anthony Scarcella and Justin Stagg.
Daly, a sophomore from Bronxville, was 21st with a 15-over 157, while Scarcella, a senior from Scarsdale, and Stagg, a junior who transferred from White Plains to Harrison, tied for 25th with 16-over totals of 158.
Scarsdale junior James Nicholas and John Jay junior Bear Carlson rounded out the team total with a 17-over 159 and 30-over 172, respectively.
