Luis Fernando Barco and Patricio Alzamora brought some international flair to Winged Foot, winning the 78th Anderson Memorial on Sunday. The pair from Lima Golf Club, San Isidro, Peru defeated Timothy Kane and Matt Sughrue of Bethesda, Md. in the final 4 and 3.
They are the first duo from Europe to win the four-ball invitational since 1998.
Winged Foot director of instruction Our director of instruction, Alicia Dibos, is from Lima and is an honorary member of Lima Golf Club. Clubhouse manager, Liliana Braswell, is also from Lima as well, so there’s no doubt the winners were made to feel right at home during the week.
Fernando Barco and Alzamora defeated Pascal Grizot and Bertrand Noel of Golf National in France 6 and 5 in the semifinals. Kane and Sughrue beat defending champions Max Buckley and Max Christiana of Westchester Country Club 1-up.
In the Senior Division, Bart Goodwin and Mike Peck of the Old American Golf Club in Texas defeated Jay Pumphrey and Dave Clement of Spanish Oaks Golf Club in Texas 6 and 4 in the final.
The winners beat Winged Foot’s own Bob Howe and Mike Murr in the semifinals 2 and 1. Pumphrey and Clement beat Tom Yellin and Jack Kiernan of The Stanwich Club 2 and 1 in the semifinals.
