Chris DeForest, a 25-year-old former Web.com player out of Rondout Country Club, shot a 2-under 68 on the Black Course at Bethpage State Park on Tuesday in the opening round of the Lenox Advisors New York State Open Championship.
He’s got a one-shot lead over a talented group.
Mike Miller, a mini-tour player from Brewster, opened with a 2-under 69 is tied for second along with Danny Balin, a Burning Tree assistant who won the previous two state opens, and Rob Labritz, the director of golf at GlenArbor who has also won this championship twice.
Only 10 players are in the red.
Winged Foot head pro Mike Gilmore is part of a group that is tied for fifth at 1-under. Century assistant Frank Bensel is three shots back at even par.
After the second round on Wednesday, the field will be cut to the low 60 scores and ties.
