Century assistant Frank Bensel shot a 4-under 66 at Rolling Hills Country Club on Wednesday in the final round of the Connecticut Open to claim the championship for a third time. The Fairfield, Conn. resident finished with a 7-under total of 203 to beat Mike Ballo, a mini-tour player from Woodway Country Club by two.
Bensel started the day one stroke in back of Westchester Open winner David Pastore.
Three consecutive birdies on Nos. 15, 16 and 17 landed Bensel atop the leaderboard. He also captured this event in 2009 and 2011. The White Plains native gets $12,500 for the win.
Pastore finished in a tie for third with Siwanoy assistant Jason Caron.
Century amateur Sam Bernstein finished tied for seventh at 2-under along with Winged Foot head pro Mike Gilmore.
