Rye native George Zahringer III is very much in position to add the MGA Senior Amateur to his already impressive competitive resume. It’s among the few titles he’s not yet claimed.
The 10-time MGA Player of the Year shot a tournament-record 7-under 67 on the West Course at Westchester Country Club on Tuesday and leads by four heading into the final round.
“A lot went right, whenever you shoot a 65, 7-under, you’re not making many mistakes,” said the 62-year-old member at Deepdale, who had seven birdies and one eagle. “It would mean a lot (to win). Westchester is a great venue and to win any MGA championship is a big deal.”
Zahringer’s last MGA win came in 2007 at the Ike stroke play championship.
David Prowler (Bethpage State Park) is in second following a 3-under 69 and Steve Rose (Fresh Meadow) is third, five shots off the lead.
