Carmel coach Matt Murphy described the scene as “right out of a movie.” It ended with the final group, on the final green, after all three players were tied, yet there was an ironic twist: Lauren Peter had no clue she was the heroine.
Whether she knew what was at stake or not proved to be inconsequential. Peter, a freshman from Carmel, rolled in a 5-footer for birdie on the dramatic final hole to win the Section 1 girls golf tournament by one shot over Ursuline’s Caroline Hodge and Rye’s Frida Henningsson at the Whippoorwill Club in Armonk.
Peter’s final-round 76 left her at 10-over for the tournament, which began with last week’s opening round at Rotella Golf Course in Thiells.
“I didn’t know where I stood. I didn’t even know I won until my teammate told me I won,” the 15-year-old Peter said. “I walked back up the hill and she was like, ‘Congratulations.’ I said, ‘Oh, I won?'”
Peter had knocked a pitching wedge to 5 feet at the fourth hole, a downhill, 133-yard par 3 that served as her group’s final hole of the tournament. As they had the previous hole, when all three girls had birdie putts, both Hodge and Henningsson were also on the green in regulation. They putted prior to Peter and missed, finishing 11-over.
Peter, who placed second at sectionals as an eighth grader and seventh in the states, was certainly not a surprise winner. She ranked first in the section in scoring differential after debuting as Carmel’s No. 1 player last year.
She flashed more of that promise at the 11th hole Wednesday, nearly acing the 137-yard par 3 before tapping in for birdie. In fact, outside of a pair of double bogeys, Peter’s scorecard was nearly unblemished.
Hodge, the first-round leader and another freshman, shot a final-round 79. Henningsson, a senior who started the day one back, closed with a 78. They were seven shots better than anyone else in the field.
The top nine players advanced to the state tournament, which is scheduled for SUNY Delhi on June 13-14.
“I’m really excited,” Peter said. “I did well last year, but I also have some really great friends going up and I’m looking forward to playing with them.”
