Adam Horton and Roger Newsom rode a wave of momentum to a resounding win at the 79th Anderson Memorial Four Ball Invitational, rolling in five birdies on the East Course at Winged Foot during the decisive stretch to post a 6-and-5 victory over Kris Devlin and Craig Smith of Foxland Harbour (Tenn.) Golf Club.
The Elizabeth Manor (Va.) Golf and Country Club duo went in front with a birdie No. 4 and never looked back.
Horton and Newsom had to go through past champions Parker Smith and Dan Crocket of The Country Club (Tenn.), moving ahead with a birdie on the 10th and closing out the 2-and-1 win the 17th. Devlin and Smith posted a 3-and-2 win over Sam and Will Bernstein of Century Country Club in the semifinals, ending a comeback attempt with a birdie on the 15th hole.
In the senior division, John Benson and Don Erickson won for the second time, winning Nos. 15, 16 and 17 to beat Winged Foot’s own Jim Graham and Joe Sommers 3 and 1. The Punxsutawney (Pa.) Country Club team also won in 2010.
Benson and Erickson knocked off Tom Blank and Mark Dugan of Oak Hill Country Club 3 and 2 in the semifinal. Graham and Sommers beat Jay Pumphrey and Dave Clement of the Desert Mountain (Ariz.) Club 1-up in the semifinals, getting birdies at Nos. 16 and 17 to square the match and move ahead.
