Grant Sturgeon played his way into the final grouping Monday, shooting a 1-under 69 in the second round of the PGA Professional National Championship at Philadelphia Cricket Club. The assistant from Winged Foot is four shots behind Ben Polland, a 24-year-old assistant from Deepdale, who had the 36-hole lead at 7-under 135.
GlenArbor director of golf Rob Labritz had a strong round interrupted by muscle cramps, and limped in with a 71. He suffered a three-putt double bogey on the 18th, and is in a fourth-place tie five shots off the lead with two rounds to play. Paramount head pro Steve Scott carded a 69 on Monday and is tied for ninth at 1-under and Quaker Ridge head pro Brian Gaffney moved into a tie for 14th with a 69 that got him back to even for the championship.
The low 20 scorers in the PGA Professional National Championship will advance to the 97th PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin.
