James McHugh claimed his first MGA title, beating James Nicholas 5 and 4 in the final of the Met Junior at Paramount Country Club. The rising junior at Rye turned with a 3-up lead, then won the 11th and 12 holes with pars. McHugh closed out the match two holes later.
“I was struggling with my swing a little bit,” McHugh said. “I still managed my way around the course and scrambled and kept making pars.”
McHugh did not trail once in match play and beat Ethan Ng 3 and 2 before lunch. Nicholas, who graduated from Scarsdale and is heading for Yale, beat Chris Yeom in his semifinal match.
